The world of video games would look vastly different without Shigeru Miyamoto.
Born in 1952 in Kyoto, Japan, Miyamoto has become one of, if not THE, most influential figures in video game history.
After joining Nintendo in 1979, Miyamoto was instrumental in Nintenendo’s transition from playing cards to video games when, in 1981, he developed the iconic Donkey Kong, one of the first narrative-driven games.
Not to be outdone by himself, Miyamoto would then go on to create legendary games such as The Legend of Zelda and the Super Mario Brothers, firmly cementing Nintendo’s dominance for decades to come.
It was Super Mario who reshaped the future of video games by being among the first to introduce the side-scrolling format and tighter control movements.
All totaled, Miyamoto-created franchises have sold more than a billion copies. Because of these accolades, Nintendo would go on to become the leader in the evolution of video games from arcade cabinets to the modern day open-world adventures.
Miyamoto would go on to head up the company’s newly formed Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development (Nintendo EAD) department, which went on to usher in new eras of gaming such as Nintendo 64, SNES and Super Mario 64, as well as Ocarina of Time, Wii and GameCube, in addition to many others.
He accomplished this with an unorthodox style that relied on his own enjoyment for a game, rather than relying on analytics and focus groups.
Miyamoto’s acumen earned him the honor of being the first person ever elected to the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame.
And for all of that, we tip our cap to Shigeru Miyamoto as the Pop Culture Hall of Fame’s class of 2024 representative for Game Developers.
