If it ever seems like the line between broadcast programming and advertising gets blurred, you’re not alone. Such confusion can be unintentional or insidious, but either way, in 1963, the German government had had enough and required broadcasters to make it clearer. The public service TV broadcaster ZDF found a way to counter the effect. The Mainzelmännchen are a group of six animated characters who punctuate the breaks with silly antics lasting just a few seconds. For their brief but long-lasting mark on German TV and beyond, The Mainzelmännchen are inducted into the Pop Culture Hall of Fame as our Characters of 2025.

They originally appeared during Heute-show, a satirical news program. Satire, done well, can cause enough confusion to viewers, so these animated guys helped light the way. The name is a portmanteau of Mainz, home of ZDF, and Heinzelmännchen, a type of gnome common in folklore in the region. They were created by Wolf Gerlach, a renowned German illustrator. Despite the very short run time, each character had a unique personality, and they quickly became fan favorites.
They were even given names, in easy-to-remember alphabetical fashion, helping kids latch onto them. Anton, Berti, Conni, Det, Edi, and Fritzchen. So there’s a little educational value as a bonus.
As it turns out, their entertainment value was so strong that they spawned their own industry of children’s books, merchandise, and radio dramas. Ironically, the Mainzelmännchen sort of became commercials for their own products, exactly the opposite of what they were intended to do. They even popped up on pedestrian traffic lights! Their popularity long outlived their original purpose. (For an American parallel, think of how the Crash Test Dummies went from public service announcements to toys and cartoons.)
Over 60 years later, the Mainzelmännchen remain popular characters in German-speaking countries. In fact, there are a couple of generations of fans who probably don’t even realize their humble origins. For converting their few seconds of service to decades of popularity, Mainzelmännchen are the latest Characters to make the Pop Culture Hall of Fame.
