For a character who doesn’t have a mouth, Gromit sure has made his voice heard in the worlds of animation, comedy and canines.
Created by Nick Park and drawn to life by Aardman Animators, this anthropomorphic dog is half of the fabled Wallace & Gromit duo that’s been entertaining children and adults alike since their big screen debut in 1989.
In the years since, Wallace and Gromit have become cultural icons in the United Kingdom and beyond, appearing everywhere from a pair of full length features and four short films, to animated, television and web series, as well as theatrical plays and even video games.
The precocious pup got his start in “A Grand Day Out,” which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. In the ensuing years Wallace & Gromit have earned five BAFTAs, three Academy Awards and even a Peabody Award.
Five of their specials – “Wallace & Gromit in the Wrong Trousers” (1993), “A Close Shave” (1995), “The Incredible Adventures of Wallace & Gromit” (2001), and “A Grand Day Out” (1989) – have all earned a score of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes, followed by “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit” (2005) with a 95 percent rating.
Their most recent feature “Vengeance Most Fowl” opened to much fanfare in late December of 2024 and also holds a 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, proving that the franchise is still thriving more than 35 years since its inception.
But who is Gromit and his pal Wallace?
Wallace & Gromit employ a stop-motion, claymation style that utilizes plasticine models that draw its unique look from 1960s inspired British cartoons with a touch of modern flare.
While their location remains somewhat ambiguous, many inspirations for Gromit’s stomping grounds resemble the town of Wigan found in Park’s home county of Lancashire in North England.
The beige beagle has been praised as being one of the most expressive characters in British lore, despite the fact (or because of) that he lacks a mouth. Gromit enjoys the finer things in life such as literature, music and his dog bone.
His personality juxtaposes nicely with his partner and best friend Wallace, who employs a simpler look at life highlighted by this affinity for Wensleydale cheese.
Together, they’re the perfect duo for adventure and thwarting and evil that may be lurking. As a result, Wallace and Gromit have become one of the most recognizable and lovable animated characters in United Kingdom lore.
And because of this, Gromit is the latest character to be inducted into the Pop Culture Hall of Fame.
