Dune Inducted into the Pop Culture Hall of Fame Class of 2024

Posted on February 12, 2025 by Chris Wuensch

All the way from the sands of Arrakis comes our newest inductee as the Pop Culture Hall of Fame welcomes the Dune franchise to its class of 2024.

The brainchild of the late Frank Herbert, the original Dune book is considered the best-selling science fiction novel in history, winning the Hugo Award as well as the inaugural version of the prestigious Nebula Award after the book’s release in 1965.

In the decades to follow, the Dune franchise would expand faster than the galaxy to mediums such as comics, films and even video games while creating a cult-like following in its wake.

Set 1,100 years in the distant future, the Dune saga follows the dust-dwelling hero Paul Antreides as he navigates the hellscape of Arrakis in an effort to save his family while warring factions battle it out over one of the universe’s most precious resources.

In a time where most science fiction stories focused on the implementation of exotic new technologies, Herbert’s Dune featured a world where technology finds itself under heavy suppression – while employing themes such as environmentalism, religion and more. All while still managing to encapsulate the thrill of adventure and heroism.

The franchise received a meteoric boost with its first original film in 1984 written and directed by David Lynch and featuring Patrick Stewart and the big-screen debut of Kyle MacLachlan.

Director Denis Villaneuve gave life to the Dune again in 2021 and 2024, tabbing Timothee Chalomat, Zendaya and other big stars to continue the legendary tale.

The film grossed more than $407 million en route to garnering 10 Academy Award nominations (winning six of them) and three Golden Globes (winning one).

And for that, Dune earns a spot in the Pop Culture Hall of Fame’s class of 2024 for franchise.
