Sometimes laughter isn’t just the best medicine, it’s the ideal way to make a positive and lasting impact across the world. Richard Curtis and Sir Lenny Henry founded Comic Relief in 1985, based on the concept created by charity worker Jane Tewson.
In the years since its first event at a Sudanese refugee camp, Comic Relief has gone on to raise more than €1.6 billion towards global initiatives for poor and disenfranchised people, highlighted by its “Golden Pound Principal,” in which all money donated goes directly to charity, rather than on items such as salaries, operating costs and more.
The organization’s signature Red Nose Day, held annually around the middle of March, is a live extravaganza hosted by the BBC. The Red Noses, featuring a new design every year, have become quite popular with the sale of each one benefitting the charity. All totaled, more than 50 variants of the noses over the period of 19 Red Nose Day en route to becoming a collectible item. The nose can be found in local supermarkets and charity locations in exchange for a donation.
The event has drawn some of the biggest names in UK comedy, including more than 60 hosts from David Tennant, Jimmy Carr and Simon Pegg, along with Curtis and Henry, who remain active to this day. And many more comedic heavyweights and industry leaders.
Author J.K. Rowling penned a pair of books for the 2001 Comic Relief effort. One of which went on to become an immensely popular annex to the Harry Potter universe. You know it as “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”
The concept has become so popular that the organization has since branched out to other countries from Ireland, Finland and Belgium to Australia, Germany and Russia and beyond.
Comic Relief recently announced a charity event in February of 2025 in New York City to benefit the victims of the devastating wildfires that struck Southern California in January of that year.
