Every now and then, an actor gets on a roll of roles and might appear in three or four movies in a year. What if you averaged four movies for a decade? How about over a career of 70 years? Amazingly, Christopher Lee did just that, playing everything from drama to comedy to fantasy to horror along the way. For his gigantic contribution to cinema history, Christopher Lee now stars in the Pop Culture Hall of Fame as our Actor inductee for 2025.
How many actors have had major roles in the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and James Bond franchises? Lee was in all of them. But why pigeonhole him just for enhancing three of the biggest film series of all time? After all, he has over 280 credits on IMDb.com! That is a staggering number of roles in a seven-decade career that went right up to this death.
His deep voice, intimidating stature, and steely cold expression made him a perfect villain or even a hero. In addition to playing Saruman in the acclaimed film trilogy, he was also the narrator in the animated Hobbit films. For fans of old school horror, he played Count Dracula in numerous Hammer films. He also starred in the original Wicker Man, so throw in comedy-horror, too. He also starred in Psycho-Circus, a long-forgotten film until it was immortalized by Mystery Science Theater 3000, so that’s unintentional comedy-horror.
Amazingly, Lee never won an Oscar in his career. In fact, he was never even nominated for one. That didn’t deter him from trying, and it certainly didn’t stop studios from hiring him. Widely considered a friendly, approachable, genuine soul, it seems he did it for love of the craft more than the paycheck.
Seriously, scroll through that IMDb list. It seems impossible for someone to work that much in one lifetime. For his inexhaustible spirit, Christopher Lee is now appearing in the Pop Culture Hall of Fame as our 2025 inductee as an Actor.
